Effort estimation methodologies

As part of my work, there is a regular need to estimate the schedule and efforts involved in Documentation : it could writing a test plan, test scripts, requirements gathering, documenting(including doing R & D) specifications, requirements.

I am in the process of developing an estimation plan for the above kind of work. I would appreciate inputs from people who could share their knowledge.
