Email 90 day deletion policy

Our company is looking at implimenting a 90 day auto-deletion policy for email and want to give users the ability to retain emails in compliance with our corporate retention policy within their inbox. We're debating over what bucket approach to take. Does anyone have any experience with implimenting a retention strategy for email?

I would put a cap on the size of the inbox before I started auto-deleting people's email. that way if people's inbox is full, then inorder to get more mail they have to put the current contents into a .pst... Or clean out their own mailbox. Thus the IT department doesnt get blamed for deleting "important" email.

Auto-deleting email, probably will cause more of a headache than its worth...
