System configuration: Win2K pro, Outlook98 Corporate/Workgroup, token-ring network, max transmit frame size 1048, IE6, pop3 email account, Gateway brand PC.
Situation: E-mail with an attachment (usually a Word 97 document) sent to and/or receivedfrom any one of several Lotus Notes 5.x users will not open in Outlook98 or in Lotus Notes. When the user double-clicks to open the attachment, it either doesn?t open or opens with ASCII symbols and empty box symbols. (We do NOT control the Exchangeserver. It is maintained by a separate state agency and the local telco.)
Research: I have looked at the MS KnowledgeBase and IBM Domino/Lotus Notes information database. The only incompatibility issues listed are between Outlook and Lotus Notes 4.x or older.
Attempted solution: I (re)installed the Corp/Workgroup features as suggested by MS. This did not solve the problem.
