Email messages in personal folders

By twest ·
I have a user who states that he has email messages disappearing out of his personal folders. He states that he is not deleting the messages. I have checked his email client (Outlook 2000), and verified that there are no rules in place which delete or archive email messages on the folders in question. On the backend we are using Exchange 5.5, if that is relevant. Can anyone tell me what might be happening here?

Thanks for answering so quickly. This was not the answer, however.

I have seen this before. If it's the last thing you do you with be thanking me. Every mailbox acquires a unique SID from the Exchange server when created but it rarely happens that the SID gets corrupted but it happens. What you might need to do which is harmless but necessary is to notify the user that you will carry out necessary maintenance on their mailbox or more so out of normal office hours.

Note information regarding user’s mailbox properties, export the entire mailbox items toa ‘PST’ or use previously successful backup. Delete user’s mailbox and recreate. After you have filled in the required properties, as it was previously import ‘PST’ into mailbox or restore from current backup. I can assure you that the problem will be solved.

PST's are small databases just like the user's mailbox. Run SCANPST.exe (search it and put a shortcut on the desktop) against the PST file, it is gui-based and easy to run. It will run thru 8 phases, report any corruption and ask you if you want to fix it. If you use PSTs a lot, it should be run at least monthly. Also, there is a 2GB size limit on PSTs. When a PST gets large, just create a new one, etc.
