Email messages in personal folders

I have a user who states that he has email messages disappearing out of his personal folders. He states that he is not deleting the messages. I have checked his email client (Outlook 2000), and verified that there are no rules in place which delete or archive email messages on the folders in question. On the backend we are using Exchange 5.5, if that is relevant. Can anyone tell me what might be happening here?
