Email Virus Scanner

By jmoody76 ·
We use Exchange 5.5 and Outlook 2000 for email. We have Outlook configured to use the Exchange Server Service for email. I know there are programs that are loaded on the server such as Trend Micro's ScanMail for Exchange that can scan email as they come in but it is kind of expensive for the few users we have. All of the client side virus scanners that have checked out can only scan POP mail and not the Exchange service mail. Is there a client side email scanner that can scan the Exchange email? We use Windows 98/NT/2000/XP.

Could be wrong, but I doubt that you will find the answer you are looking for. I've been working with Exchange and Outlook since 94/95.

As far as cost, which would be more expensive placing a decent anti-virus program on the server and being protected from messages containing viruses such as the klez.h worm, nimda, sircam, and etc. Or pay the price later in man hours to extract the virus from your system/network and in reputation if that virus was inadvertently sent to one of your clients/customers/associates.

To me no network is too small to have a protection on the server side. I would rather error on the side of security than on the side of embarassment.

My 2 cents.

To be completely safe you should have both.
But if you feel that would be overkill and don't want the expense of the server side AV, you can get client-side AV software that will monitor client mail accessed from a server.
A free one is at www.grisoft.com They also sell a "full featured" version. It is an excellent freebie. If you do some searching you will find cleint-side software that will do the job you need.
