EML attachments not being filed in mail enabled sharepoint library

By Greg Price ·
I am using MOSS 2007 and have an email enabled library which people use to submit documents for processing. The library is set up to file both the email and any attachments in the root folder. This works fine, for the most part.

However, I have come across a problem with some attachments not being saved in the library. After some investigation, I have narrowed the problem down to this:

1) Person A creates a document they would like us to process
2) The document must be approved by person B first, so Person A emails it to B, as an attachment
3) Person B approves the document and forwards it to the sharepoint library for processing. However, their mail client is set to "forward messages as attachments". This results in the sharepoint library receiving an email with a .EML attachment.
4) The original email is received and saved in the sharepoint library
5) The .EML attachment is not saved.
6) The following error message is created in the log file: An error occurred while attempting to create an attachment for an item sent via e-mail. The e-mail was sent to the list "Incoming Documents", and the error was: Object reference not set to an instance of an object..

If Person B's email client is set to "forward messages in line", there is no problem and everything works as expected. Unfortunately, I do not have control of which email client the people submitting documents use or how they are configured.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated,
