Enable sound card in older games?

By galahad04 ·
I am running Windows Me. Before upgrading, when I was running Win95, my sound card ran properly for all of my older DOS-based games (early 90's games). However, after upgrading to Windows Me, the sound card simply does not play at all when I set my DOS games to play on sound blaster. (This is also the case with Windows 98, since I tried running the games on another computer I have running Win 9. I can still get Roland sound to work when running my DOS games, but it is not quite as good asthe sound blaster. Does anyone know why the sound blaster worked in Win95 but not Win98/Me and how I might be able to get it working again for playing games in DOS?

Try updating the drivers. Something similar happened to me once and that fixed it

I do not think that updating the divers will help since they are all current as of 6/8/00. (Windows Me set up the drivers automatically when I first installed it.)

Go into windows explorer under program files and find the executable for the game you want and drag it out to the desktop. In other words make a shortcut to your game executable file and stick it on the desktop. Right click the icon and select properties. I cant remember the exact wording of the setting you need to make but there should be something in there that talks about making the game think it is in dos but you are actually running it from within windows. There will be a box that you check or uncheck. Once you do that click apply and see if the sound is any better. This is for games that have to be played in ms-dos mode. I wasn't sure if the games you are referring to apply but give it a try it anyway.

Actually I have tried that, but still wasn't able to get the sound blaster working. Thanks very much for your advice though
