erratic keyboard behavior after installing Windows 7

By gordondarling ·
Hi,

I've just installed windows 7 on my wife's HP Pavillion dv6000 laptop, and she is reporting that her keyboard is behaving very erratically. She says that while she is typing the cursor will jump to another part of the page, highlighting some text, then erasing what was highlighted with her further typing. She is getting very frustrated, especially after I promised her a better user experience after upgrading to Windows 7.

I suspected that she be inadvertently hitting the mousepad, but after further testing, I've confirmed that this is not causing the issue. I did however confirm that the cursor is jumping to wherever the mouse is currently positioned (so even though I'm sure I'm not hitting the mousepad while I type, the jumping occurs anyway to the current mouse position).

Does anyone have a clue as to what may be causing this?

Thanks,

Gordon

Is this one of those HP's 6000 affected by the Legal Complaint?

If so I would suggest contacting HP and getting them to repair as required by the case before proceeding any further.

Also you can try lowering the sensitivity of the Track Pad but with all NB's I recommend the use of an External Mouse & Keyboard when there are problems like this. Even the lightest brush of the Track Pad or one if it's keys can cause this to happen.

Also did you check this system with the Windows 7 Upgrade Adviser before embarking on a change of the OS?

Just because 7 is new doesn't mean that it will produce a Better User Experience on old Hardware. This was what caused Vista to be considered as so bad by the General Public and some members of the Press. While Vista wasn't great it was OK if used on Hardware specifically designed for it's use and correctly configured. Many Budget Systems and Old Hardware just failed to meet this requirement and because of that Vista was considered a Bad OS which it wasn't really.

If people rush out to change OS's on Old Hardware 7 will get a similar reputation which it really doesn't deserve and we will be stuck with XP long after M$ stops supporting it with no replacement possible.

I have recently upgraded my Acer Travelmate 5520 to Windows 7 Pro 64 bit, and am experiencing the same problem. Very frustrating and still looking for resolve.

Did you update Touch Pad drivers ?...

by OldER Mycroft In reply to RE: erratic keyboard beha ...

According to the Acer website, the Synaptics drivers for Windows 7 64-bit are NOT included within the Windows 7 installation.

Running the Travelmate with the wrong Touchpad drivers could account for the erratic behaviour, irrespective of whether the Touchpad is being 'touched' or not.

Check that your Touchpad drivers are:

TouchpadDriver 13.2.2.0 28.2MB 2009/10/21
