Error 633:

By jtraska ·
The modem (or other connecting device) is already in use or is not configured properly.

That's the error I keep getting on my mother-in-law's desktop w/ XP Pro SP3. It suddenly won't connect through her modem and it keeps giving her this error. I know it's not a SP issues as I put the SP on in Feb and this error started happening a couple of months later.

I can dial out to any given phone through the modem using Hyper Terminal. I've tried reinstalling her old modem; swapping it out w/ one that I knew worked; I've tried changing the COM ports; and now she is using her BlackBerry as a modem at it is giving the same error but she IS able to get out via the BB on her laptop.

I've searched all over the web and tried various fixes and nothing has worked. Has anyone out there experianced this error before?

Checked and

by jtraska In reply to A couple of checks

there is no fax software running and there are no other modems running. I have the PCI modem disabled and the BlackBerry still can't connect (still getting 633 error). I've uninstalled and reinstalled the modem. I've downloaded and reinstalled the modem driver. The BlackBerry works just fine on the laptop running the exact same OS (XP Pro w/ SP3) and I never disabled the modem on there. QuickBooks is running on the desktop...but it's also running on the laptop... I'm really at a loss here!!

OK lets see if an old driver is interfering

Follow the steps in this article and remove everything that that appears translucent or faded.

Get rid of old device drivers it works for XP as well.
