Error Closes Unsaved Documents

By CST ·
My user is getting an intermittent error after creating an item in MS Office 2000 Professional in either an e-mail message, a Word doc or an Excel spreadsheet stated as: "This program cannot be closed. If it is being debugged, please resume it or close the debugger first." When she clicks OK, the unsaved item closes is lost and must be re-created. I tried to replicate the problem, but it didn't happen for me. We are running MS Office as a published application through a Citrix desktop, ver. 8.0. This user has a workstation with Windows 2K OS. Some users are using WYSE terminals. Ten minutes later she called the helpdesk again and was seeing the same error while trying to update an existing spreadsheet.

Any assistance would be appreciated. Thanks.

Check whether anything has been installed in the Startup folders for Word, Excel, etc...some Office-based viruses will install malicious macros in the Startup folders for various applications.

Thanks for your comment but our virus coverage is quite extensive and I don't suspect that is the problem.

The previous answers sounds logical, but I'd check and see if there is a shortcut key (or a combination of keys) she's hitting by accident since you cannot replicate this error. I have long nails and I'm forever hitting shortcuts I never knew existed. My sister called and said her monitor screen had suddenly turned 90 degrees. I did a remote assist and set it right, but I'm pretty sure (because she has long nails)that she hit some obscure combination of keys in error.

This user was accidentally hitting additional keys possibly causing shortcuts to run. She has a new laptop and is probably not used to the flatter keys. I think you may have something with the long nails theory! Thanks.

I've ran into this sort of error alot. There's some bugs in Office 2000 that will make embedded objects (I run into it with Equation Editor) cause crashes.

Another error with similar roots is when you save the save progress bar (on the bottom left side of the screen) only progresses 3/4 of the way, but no error is shown. Upon trying to close the program users are met with an error window that says that the drive is out of space and that you need to pick another location...regardless of the amount of free space there really is.

SOLUTION:
You must find the vile object that is causing the problem and take care of it. Myself, I use Equation Editor alot so when this happens I'll go through all the equations I've added since the file worked properly and double click on them to open them. If you can edit the object, all is well. When the you come across the problem object you'll see another error window saying that "the server is not available..." etc etc. I normally recreate that equation and then erase the wrong-doer.

That normally does it.

TIP:
Avoid using Autosave. If the autosave runs while you're editing an object it'll cause this kind of problem. In spite of that knowledge I still get caught every once in a while myself.

I am not familiar with Equation Editor so I don't know how this might help me. Thanks anyway.

First, try insalling any service packs for Win 2000 and for MS Office. They may need to be insalled on the Citrix Server too. If you go to the microsoft update site, try the new version of Microsoft Updates as it checks both Office and Windows Downloads.

I did Google on it and here are some locations where there my be some answers...

We're OK on the service packs, but these articles were very helpful as well. Thanks.
