Error Message SU0168 During Install of W

    Locked

    by mdtorres ·

I get an SU0168 error message when installing Windows 98 2nd edition over an
    existing Windows 98 installation.

I read somewhere that this is because they’re both oem/full versions.

Now the question is….is there some way that I could force (fool) the Win98
2nd Edition setup into upgrading my existing set-up (while maintaining my
    previus settings).

I got the following tip from this other site and it’ supposed to apply to my
situation…Do you think it would work????

“Rename the file “WIN.COM” in the C:\WINDOWS directory. Then run setup on
the OSR2 CD from the DOS prompt. This will upgrade your current version of
Win95 to OSR2. Tip: Remove all entries from C:\windows\start

The diagnosis of the error message is correct
      Warning SU0168
Your computer already has an operating system installed, which cannot be upgraded
by this version of Setup. Please obtain the Windows 95 (or Windows 98) Upgrade.

This is what TechNet recommends see article Q225252

To resolve this issue, run Windows 98 Setup from MS-DOS mode:

      1. Click Start, click Shutdown, click “Restart the computer in MS-DOS mode”, and
      then click OK.

      2. At the command prompt, type the followingcommands, pressing ENTER after each
      command:

      cd system
      ren setupx.dll setupx.ol1
      ren setupx.w95 setupx.ol2

Yes this answer from the other site will work. All you need to do is remove/rename Win.com and the setup program will no longer find a previous version of windows. I have done it many, many times.
