Error on Start up

By rrlegrand ·
While Windows 2000 professional is starting up I receive an error window with the following error message: "execution of the specified command has failed". The start up continues successfully but I have to click OK in the error window to get rid of this error message. What is this error message mean and how do I get rid of it. It's a nuisance.

Have you got any anti virus software on your system?

I have seen this message happen for one of two reasons:-

1. There is an instruction to load a device or software driver in win.ini or one of the other system files.

2. You may have caught a virus on your system that is trying to run one of your programs such as Outlook Express, I have seena virus show this message if what it's trying to run cannot find the inforqamtion it wants such as an address book of a certain format such as a WAB file.

If you have not got any anti virus protection then I would recommend Norton anti virus and update it to see if it detects anything (nine times out of ten it will find a virus if it's there).

I have McAfee and I ran it. However, when I re-started my system, I am still getting the error msg. However, the msg. appears only at start up. I believe it has to do with the virus software because as my toolbar comes up, right as McAfee is loading I get the msg., click ok, and everything goes well. Even if I don't click ok the system comes up normally except to get rid of the error msg screen eventually I will have to click ok..If you have any other suggestions on how to get rid of thispain msg. please let me know. Your help is greatly appreciated.

It could well be the Mcafee software then, I have seen that cause systems to hang when loading, to get away with just an error message is lucky.

The other thing I have noticed with Mcafee (and a few others) is it will not detect the most simple of viruses such as "removit" one of the oldest viruses going and it will not see it.

If you want to eliminate Mcafee from your suspisions uninstall it and then restart the computer and see if it still shows up. If it does then I would either re-install it and update it to see if that cures it or go for a new anti virus program.
