error on Win xp boot

By turtle63 ·
I have a system that is not booting into XP but will get to a point and type L 01.
Now I have fixed this for the guy by using the repair console and fix the master boot record etc.
What I want to know is what could of caused this.
I found some stuff to do with dual booting and linux etc.
Any help appreciated as I am curious

I also have a dual boot with Win XP and Linux, and I had a similar problem after deleting the linux partitions. The MBR was not updated propely and I had a similar problem like yours. I also had to use the console to repair it.

However, if you use 3rd party software, like partition magic to get rid of the linux partitions, then it'll update the MBR properly.

Thanks for that. This guy wasn't dual booting but he did have an extra partition with mpegs etc on so don't know what he had done to cause this.
Although I did also discover his hard drive was on the way out and I replaced that so whether that hadsomething to do with it who knows.
