Error w/ load PDF in IE6.x & Acrobat 5.x

By ampl ·
I've got a weird problem that suddenly cropped up. This was working, but as of December 26th, it stopped...

If my supervisor clicked on a link (using IE 5.5) that is a *pdf file, normally it launched Acrobat Reader 4.x and he could view the file. Suddenly, when he clicked on that same link, it only opens to a blank page with no error messages or any indication of something wrong.

Thinking that the problem was related to his Acrobat Reader, I made sure the settings were correct in his Reader and IE 5.5 - they were fine and untouched from before the Christmas break. Thinking maybe something got installed that caused problems, or maybe Acrobat Reader was corrupted, I uninstalled Acrobat Reader 4.x and installed Acrobat Reader 5.x toupdate him to the current version.

I tested his system after a reboot, same problem... Okay, download/install IE6 w/ latest SP, reboot, try again, nope, same problem.

In all cases, if I right mouse click, save link to a local file, and double-click it, the pdf files opens fine after launching Acrobat Reader. This worked in each iteration above; hence, I believe that the problem lies in the IE<->Acrobat interface but I can't pin it down.

Suggestions?

His machine is:
PII 333Mhz
256 Meg RAM
NT 4.0 SP6
IE6
Acrobat Reader 5
2 Gig+ on C: using NTFS
3 Gig+ on using NTFS

Thanks for the link, but it still doesn't help me. I already have uninstalled/reinstalled Acrobat Reader - I uninstalled 4.x and installed 5.x. I also upgraded IE from 5.5 to 6. According to the article, IE5.5+ fixes that problem, and/or Acrobat Reader 5 should be good...

I meant uninstall and re-install IE....not just upgrade it like you did. I think in upgrading you just masked where the problem came in. If you have a corrupt active X control, dll, etc it may not get overwritten when you upgrade and the problem just persists. I've seen this so many times with IE problems I couldn't count them. Upgrading the software frequently does not fix issues present in an earlier version.

I'll try that, although I'm thinking about redoing his computer from the ground up anyway with Windows 2000 since his is one of the only NT4 boxes left.
