### Estimate heat produced in a server room?

Is there an easy way to generally estimate the amount of heat generated by all the equipment in a server room?
We are moving to a new space and we have 8 servers, a PBX, an AS/400, 6 Cisco switches, and a UPS going into a server room approx. 20 x15.
The A/C guy has asked for a load in BTUs. How do I calculate this?

Figure that 90% of the power used by the equipment turns into heat.

You will overestimate if you total up all the power supply wattages.

What you need to do, is have an electrician measure the current draw on the AC lines feeding your equipment.
(They should be able to do this without having to shut down power.)

Then, use the formula Watts * 3.4 = BTU/Hr

The easy way is to provide 2500 BTU/hr of AC per KVA of ?computer load? (this formula is almost the same given by TheChas in his answer, but expressed for apparent power instead of real power).
If your UPS supplies power to all your server room youmust calculate your air conditioning depending on the maximum power of this UPS.
Let me suppose the following scenario:

8 normal Intel single processor servers: 2800 VA
1 medium size (8x32) not very old PBX: 400 VA
1 AS/400 (supposed iSeries 820 @ maximum load): 1200 VA
6 routers CISCO 2600: 1200 VA
(if the routers are model 7600, the power load is a lot bigger)

Total apparent power: 5600 VA
If you have half the load under a 3 KVA UPS, the apparent power could be around 6000 VA. Ifyou have the entire load under a, for example, 6500 VA UPS, you should use this value. In any case, to use 6500 VA is not a big over-estimation. So, 6.5 x 2500 = 16250 BTU/hr.

Using a smaller air conditioning unit will work, but will take more time to correct temperature variations, and could force the unit to work continuously, which will reduce its life and could be a problem generator.
