event viewer monitoring software

any suggestions for a simple and cheap event viewer app? something that scans the logs and compiles reports based on filtering parameters. i'd also want built in e-mail alert options.

There is a "free" one in the resource kit called CyberSafe Log Analyst. It does generate reports, but doesn't do emails.

There is a resource kit utility called DUMPEL.EXE that will scan and filter the logs, but it does not have a native e-mail facility.

There are also a variety of commercial/shareware packages (NTLast, WebTrends) that will parse a log and generate various filtered reports but I have not yet seen one with an e-mail alert option. However, one of them (wwwstat) is written in PERL and it should be pretty easy to add an e-mail function (e.g. by using the MAPISEND utility in the Resource Kit).
