Excel 2000 closes

By cpapachristou ·
I am currently running office 2000 pro on windows xp pro machine. Excel tries to open but never makes it there and returns an error" Microsoft Excel for Windows has encountered a problem and needs to close." I can open excel by typing "/safe" after the excel.exe. I am not sure where to go from here.

Excel 2000 closes

Seems to be quite common with XP. There are a long list of fixes in the MS Knowledgebase but one seems to have resolved the most problems.

See http://tinyurl.com/h5e9

The registry fixes seem to be the most applicable to this problem.

START>RUN type regedit to open registry editor.

(It is a good idea to click 'Registry>Export Registry File' before modification, this way it is easily replaced if corrupted)

FROM MS knowledgebase;
Corruption in the Registry Keys:
Remove the following registry keys.

EXCEL 2000-
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\9.0
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Office\9.

This should do it.
