Excel 2003 Workbook Sharing

By jrobertson ·
I was after general opinions about using the Shared workbook feature within Excel 2003. We are looking at using it so that people can be editing a spreadsheet, but also import the data via SQL2005.

I have had the experience where the workbook is shared and open; the SQL is currently accessing the data within the spreadsheet; save is hit within Excel and Excel then crashes quite horribly, not allowing an auto recover file and turning off the auto save feature. This occured approx 85% of the time.

Any opinions would greatly appreciated.

Let end-(l)users download files and open them in Excel with an additional step. If any of their edits are important enough to add, they can spend the extra 20 seconds on a separate upload opetation. If they aren't willing to spend 20 extra seconds, their edits aren't important enough for the project community to bother viewing and/or inspecting. In the vast majority of cases they probably just view & close anyway.
