Excel 2007 templates getting corrupted after editing…

Have Excel templates on a network drive. Users make a copy of the document, complete it on a tablet and the completed version is sent to another folder via SyncToy. So users are working with a worksheet based on the template NOT the template
What is happening is that when the template is edited (and these are basic forms – no validation, conditional formatting, macros) the following message comes up..

This has happened more than once. The fix at the moment has been to rename and resave the template but I’d be concerned that it would happen again (and again) and would like your advice with the following..
1. Are there any Excel recovery tools you would recommend (there are about 30 files in question)?
2. What would you recommend as good practice to keep this to a minimum?
3. Am thinking of porting all the documents over to Word (there’s been no problems with the Word documents)
