Sounds like your floppy disk may be damaged unfortunately. Either that or it might be locked - look on the back at the bottom right - is the small plastic slider at the top position? Hope this helps...

have you tried this: copy the files to your hard disk before you attempt to open them

You could try undoing the read only attribute by right-clicking file in explorer, left click properties and unticking Read Only under attributes. (That is, if you can "see" the file in Explorer.)

I think that you might find that this floppy has gone to digital heaven

Good luck

Are you accessing the files on the disk from the same computer that they were created on and saved to floppy disk? Have you tried opening them on other computers that have excel 2000 or greater? Can you still write other files to the floppy disk and read from them later?

Doing these things can help pinpoint problems or at least give us a better direction in which to pursue.

Sounds like it was save to a floppy and Excel was not closed out before the floppy was ejected ! This will cause the read only error when trying to access the file. The file says it is open on the computer that saved it ! Take it back to the computer that saved it and open the file, then close excel. Should be accessable on all computers then.
