Excel freezes computer

My name is Yvonne. I am an online teacher. I use Excel for my grade book. I use a multi tabbed workbook with a studentname on each tab. When I am tired (which is all the time), I sometimes will type in the same name twice on the Excel tabs. This results in Excel freezing telling me to rename the tab because it cannot have two tabs with the same name. When Excel freezes, it will not allow me to fix my errors my deleting the tab; it will not allow me to quit the program and I end up having to turn off the computer using the computer button on/off switch. Last time this happened with my old computer, my computer started having booting problems that could not be fixed by the Computer Tech. Now I have new new Dell Inspirton E 1405 laptop and I am afraid that the same problem will occur. It is running Windows XP I think and I know it runs Outlook Express. What do I do to keep this Dell in good running order?
