Excel generating errors

By dkzgambo ·
we have 10 networked computers all running Win XP Pro and having Office XP or Office 2003. we have a shared excel database on one imposed server (running office xp). all other computers can ably assess the database except the server.

if u try to open the file on the server, excel generates errors then recovers it but since it has a lot of formulas, some can not be restored so the recovered file is either renamed or not saved at all.

i've tried to move the database to another computer the same thing happens to this particular computer. if i remove the sharing, this server opens ok but i want it to be shared as i want simultaneous access.

i've tried repairing excel, re-installing office but to no avail. the last thing i want to do is upgrade office xp to office 2003 as i want to save it for later( the activation crap! dont know how many more times am left with to activate)

Your help on the next step is greatly appreciated

Dorothy

Excel does not support concurrent access to a single file in a peer-to-peer environment. If you have a server, then the server handles the opportunistic locks correctly.

You'd be better off converting this to Access AND placing it on a real server.

Not knowing what the errors are it's hard to give advice on how to resolve those.

well, the file has been shared for the past 3 months and everything was ok until recently when one day it just went boom... Microsoft excel has encountered a problem and needs no close.. bla bla bla. Mind you, its only the PC that has the file that cant access it, all other can ably do so.
