Excel keeps sessions open on a share

I’ve got a share on a server that contains excel files where users have to update information frequently. When the users update the info, save their work and even reboot their PC’s, their session on this share still stays open. The file is then read-only to everyone except that user. I have to manually kill the session to let other users in again. I’ve noticed that it only happens with excel files. Any ideas?
