Excel Mail Merge - showing an extra .0 in Zip Code field

By bcbergqu ·
I am attempting to merge an Excel cell range with the mail merge wizard in Microsoft Word. Everything goes without a hitch except the Zip Code. I have tried it several different ways (with the excel data formatted as Number, Text, Custom #####, etc.), but no matter what I do, the mail merge pulls the Zip Code as #####.0 (For example: 90210.0). Does anybody have a suggestion on how to rid my merge of the extra .0??

After you have created the email with the merge fields, double click the zip code field on the email template and change the field code mask.

For a 5 digit zip code, the mask would be:

\# 0####

The leading zero would then be printed instead of dropped.

If your data has the zip+4 format, the easiest thing is to divide the field into two fields so you have a zip and a +4 column, each with their own mask.

Of course, the easiest way to make a merge field is to use the built in field mapping. Map the pre-defined 'PostalCode' field to the column where your data is stored. That 'knows' what the numeric picture switch should look like!
