Excel Not Enough Memory

By lmcdonald ·
I received excel files as attachments via email and when I try to open in excel I get "Not enough memory" error. These are files I receive on a regular basis and can usually open without any problem. Memory should not really be a problem. I just recently had memory installed in my computer. But it shouldn't have been a problem regardless. I have tried saving the files to hard drive and opening but still get message. Files are between 30-32kb.
But I have noticed my excel responding very slowly. Like when I do a copy and paste. It takes a while for it to paste.

How are you opening the file? Are you just cliking on an email attachment? If you save the file to your coputer first, open Excel and then open the document, do you still get the error?

Could be a virus that is contributing to your memory problem. Update your anti-virus. If you still have a problem after removing the virus, try reinstalling windows and microsoft office. Some of the files might be corrupted.

Open excel in safe mode by clicking on Start > Run and type in excel.exe /s then click on OK, Excel will open up in safe mode with the basic system defaults. try opening your rogue file, if it opens then it's probably due to an add-in or macro that you have running in Excel and it's using up lots of system memory, try deleting any macros from the xlstart folder(use the search for files or folders utility to find it) and also un tick any unused add-ins from Tools > Addins list.

I've tried opening from the email attachment and also saving the files to hard drive and tried opening that way. Same results either way.
These files have no macros and no charts.
Today I received about 12 of these files and a 4 of them produced this error. All the others opened fine. The individual sending these files to me is basicall opening an excel file with some fields formatted and some labels, then entering data, saving under another name and then emailing to me. So each of these files starts with the same file. I can view the files if I do a Quick View. Unfortunately, some of the data is not there and I can't manipulate the data.
I am really confused by this one.
