Locked

Excel Protection

By travel_advocate ·
I want to protect changes on an Excel spreadsheet yet allow others to sort the information. I clicked Tools > Protection > Protect Sheet > Allow all users of this worksheet to SORT. Didn't work. Anyone know how to make it work?

Users can't sort ranges containing locked cells on a protected worksheet, regardless of setting.
You could record a macro that unprotects, sorts and then protects again.

You can sort ranges on a protected sheet IF those cells are, themselves, not protected.
The macro option does work.

The first Answer said that I can't sort a protected worksheet. What then is the purpose of the "SORT" under the "Tools > Protection > Protect Sheet > Allow all users of this worksheet to SORT"?

Instead of protecting the sheet, save the document under a read-only password. To do this, use Save As and, under Options, set the password to modify, leaving the password to open blank. This will give an annoy message when they open the document, but it will protect your data and allow user sorting.
