Excel .tmp files not deleted

By astrarich ·
When our users open excel files on the shared network drive on our server, files are created with the .xls~***.tmp extensions in the same directory as the original file, and they are not being deleted. When the excel file is saved another .tmp file is created.

The files can be manually deleted. These are rapidly filling up the network folder and cluttering up the structure confusing users. I know a script could be written to delete them, but this is not an ideal solution

This problem has only just started happening and it is getting worse as more users are begining to experience the same problem, and complaints are coming in very fast.

Any heros out there with a solution to stop these files appearing in the network shared folders in the first place?

Try this:

AutoRecover setting is under - 'Tools', 'Options', 'Save' .

Set the location to the local PC's temp location.

Many Thanks for the answer, but in this case it has not solved the problem.

The PC's in question have the default path for 'autorecover' which points to the local temp folder you suggest. Even if the autorecover is turned off the problem still exists.

The .xls~.tmp file only appears in the network shared folder where the excel files exist. If we work locally with an excel file, say in the 'My documents' folder there is no problem.

Try disabling your anti-virus and try it again. If that works make sure your setting for ON ACCESS Scan are set to not check network drives AND/OR on Read and not Write.

I don't have a better solution...but I had to add all my network drive letters to the exclusion list to make it work.

My Environment: NETWARE 6.5/ VirusScan Enterprise 7.1.0
