Excel: Validate & Conditional fomatting

I have validated the data in excel in such a fashion wherein if i select ‘a’ from a list it will show me only the data corresponding to ‘a’. Now at the same time i want that in case i don’t select any of the items in list the corresponding cell should turn blank but in my case it still shows the data that was selected previously
