Excel will not launch

Excel 97 files in Explorer or on desktop will not launch. Message reads in part:C:\cannot open ‘path/filename’or one if it’s components”. Can’t launch Excel attachments in Outlook 97 either. Message reads: Cannot find the file specified. I have re-imported the Office8.0 registry key, upgraded to Office2K & still has not resolved the problem. OS is NT 4.0
