excel won't show spreadsheet

By notify ·
This is a stumper! when opening a .xls file by double-clicking on the file, Excel launches, but won't show the sheet - it simply shows a blank grey area below the formula bar. It will open anything normally from its own File|Open command.

Files are associated properly; version is office 2000 SP-3, and it has been repaired and then reinstalled, and still does the same thing.

Any clues?

Where did file come from?

Was it created with Excel 2007 and not saved for viewing in earlier versions?

Also, one other thing to check is your VIEW. Make sure it's set to NORMAL.

from itself...

Was saved from excel 2000 normally; no sheets will open, regardless of excel installation they were created with (other machines...).

I can't set view, because there's no spreadsheet. View is normal when opening sheets from excel.

This happened to me recently. The spreadsheet is still there, but somehow we cannot see this.

Go to view->new window or arrange all. this should do it.
