Excell Function

If I have two identical worksheets why can’t I use the sumif function to sum identical columns from both worksheets based on criteria from one worksheet? I get the #VALUE error. Column A on both spreadsheets have a list of identical names that are repeated down the column. Column B on both spreadsheets have different amounts for each name. I want to add the different amounts based on looking for one particular name.
