Exchange 2K Query

By DamianM ·
Does anyone know of any product that will allow deep traverse searching of the MAPI public folder store in Exchange 2000? I need to set up a system whereby all users working on a project can drop their email into the relevent area in a public foldertree. The resulting tree must be searchable. Alternatively I might set up a project mailbox, and allow all users access to this mailbox. Is there a realistic limit on the size of a mailbox or the amount of users that can connect to a mailbox. The mailbox will be used by about 100 users, and could grow in size to about 5GB.

Any help appreciated.

Cheers,

Damian

Exchange 2K Query

Well, if you are using Outlook 2000 as your client software, any folder that Outlook can display can be searched pretty thoroughly - it might not be the fastest thing on this planet, but it can be done. You can probably speed this up considerably by doing content indexing in Exchange 2K - I've never used this, and I think you might have to have the Enterprise edition to do it, but I'm not sure. Without any direct experience of the type of situation you describe, but with quite a bit of general Exchange experience, I suggest that you would probably want to have at least one server dedicated as a public store server for this type of load, and possibly even two separate servers if indeed your public store got that big with 100 users simultaneously using it fairly heavily. There are lots of good articles available from Microsoft about planning various types of Exchange deployments, and searching their web site might yield some good suggestions, too. Hope this helps!

I was really hoping for a third party add on to recursively search MAPI public folders. Anyone know of such a thing?

While you can search any folder within the Public Folder structure, you cannot search a folder and its subfolders. This is the functionality that will be required. Non MAPI public folder trees can be searched in this way, but I want to be able to search from within Outlook.
