Exchange 5.5 Backup Error

By sgandenberger ·
When I back up Exchange 5.5 Information Store and Directories, using Windows NT 4.0 Backup Utility, I receive the following error in the Event Log:

Microsoft Exchange services returned '102' from a call BackupRead [] ` additional data `-`

Does anyone know what this message means? Judging from the size of the backup it seems that everything is being archived that should be. I am just afraid that the backups will be useless if I ever need to restore from them.

Exchange 5.5 Backup Error

The only information I have on this error applies to running NTBackup from a Terminal Services session and it's a problem that was fixed in Service Pack 4 for Exchange v5.5 (just released within the past week).

Regardless of the error, though, ifyou have any doubts about the quality of your backups, you should do a test restore (preferably of the Information Store but at least try some large file that you can verify). I had a really ugly scenario a few weeks ago that got much worse when I discovered the three tapes previous to the crash had silently failed.

Exchange 5.5 Backup Error

The problem has ceased since since I am now able to backup to a tape drive installed in the Exchange Server. I believe the problem was caused by backing up across the network and that might have a tie in with the NT Terminal Services problem Paul mentioned.
