We have added an additional Exchange 5.5 sp4 server to our site. We
plan to migrate entirely to the newly added Exchange server, because
our original Exchange 5.5 sp4 server was not Exchange 5.5 Enterprise
Edition, and had the 16gb limit on the private store.
We have been moving mailboxes to the new server in increments, to
allow both servers to remain operational 24/7.
Recently, we have been receiving Event 290’s in the Application log on
the ORIGINAL Exchange server, and NDR’s are being reported by users.
This is a completely random occurance, not tied to any additional
events. Several times during a normal workday, in no particular order,
random users receive NDR’s and the 290 event shows up in the App log.
It sometimes appears that the NDR’s are received when a user on the
ORIGINAL Exchange server is sending messages to users on the NEW
Exchange server, but this also happens when users attempt to send
messages to outside users. I should also note that, normally Exchange
functions fine on both servers and that the ORIGINAL Exchange server
is the only one running the Internet Mail Connector. Here is the error
and the stats for both Exchange servers…
