I have Exchange 5.5 SP3 running via a router connection to the Internet. In order to force it to batch up outgoing emails and save telco costs we startup and shut down the IMC at specified intervals. This all works except that we get occasional emails that get stuck in the IMC outgoing directory it seems to be when the email address is invalid. Is there a way (any suggested values appreciated) to modify the MTA settings to make Exchange send an NDR back to the internal user after 2 or 3 attempts to send the message so that it doesn’t hold up the link constantly retrying .
Does max open retries mean attempts to connect to port 25 of the remote server or to get an MX record? I’ve looked at technet but it didn’t enlighten me that much andwhichever way I interpret it the default of 144 attempts seems kinda high
cheers,
Howie
