Exchange 5.5 running out of disk space

By jmoody76 ·
The hard drive on the server where Exchange 5.5 resides is running out of disk space. Most of the users connect to the server through the Exchange Server service in Outlook 2000. I had a few users that had lots of emails delete and or move those messages to a .pst on their hard drive. This did not free up any space on the hard drive. What do I need to do to free up some hard disk space? What will happen if the partition that holds the Exchange information fills up? Thanks.

You won't regain any disk space unless you do an offline defrag (ESEUTIL /d). This requires you take the server down. Read up on it before you begin, and make sure you do full backups before and after. Do a search on the MS Knowledge base with eseutil, you'll get a lot of reading material.

If possible, I'd skip the defrag and add disk space instead. In a couple of months max, your users will eat up whatever you gain back from the offline defrag anyway.

If the partition that holds your information store fills up, Exchange services will stop. You will no longer be in prevention mode, you will be in disaster recovery mode and your day will likely be ruined. See http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q170809

To complete the information given in answer 1:

Once you add a new disk, don't try and manually move your databases to the new disk. Make sure you use the Exchange Server Performance Optimizer. This is the ONLY safe way to move databases. Optimizer will (probably) recognize that a new disk is available and recomend moving your information stores to this new disk. If it doesn't (or if you are unsure which DBs to be concerned about), your primary databases (information stores) are the Private Information Store (priv.edb - mailboxes) and the Public Information Store (pub.edb - public folders).

As always, make sure you have a GOOD backup of your system before making critical changes such as this.

Good Luck.
