Sorry, the short answer is no.

The only way to do what you are asking is to create an Exchange Cluster (only available with the Enterprise version of Exchange. Of course this means you first have to create a server cluster (only available with NT4 Enterprise Server or Win2K Advanced Server).

I was about to post this same question but figured I would let you know where I am at currently. Microsoft provides clustering services which requires MS Exchange Enterprise and Advanced Server. The licensing costs alone are sky high! In order tokeep the TCO down in a smaller environment, having a standby server is the only other option.

Here are a few alternatives I am looking at now. This year, I am using an indentical server stored at another site which is up and running all of the time just running Windows 2000. I have and image of this server that I can restore in about 20 minutes. We are installing Exchange 2K on it for the purpose of testing disaster recovery (doing restores to that sever, etc.) All of this hardware was bought on this years budget as a "test server for DR"

Coming into next year, I will present the budgeting for a "second Exchange server" Since the hardware is already purchased, I will budget for it anyhow and end up purchasing Advanced Server and upgrading the current Exchange to Exchange Enterprise. By June 2004, I will have a cluster environment without shaking the budget tree too much by spreading the purchases around other projects.
