Exchange Server not recognizing local sm

I have a minor dilema I figure someone out there may have had in the past. I have an Exchange 5.5 server running on my corporate network. The test dept. here is testing IPSwitch I-Mail as an smtp email server. We have the router configured alowing the right ports for the server specific IP. Now here’s the dilema:

We can send mail from the outside to the I-Mail box. We can send mail out from and I-Mail account to the outside world and to anyone here locally on the domain. But when we try to send a message from the Exchange server (via Outlook 2000) from someone here in house to an I-mail account we get a message like this:

Unable to deliver the message due to a communications failure:
    3902 (000B099C) Host Unknown

    Any help would be appreciated.

Check the following in Exchange Administrator:

Open the Internet Mail Service under your path and click on the Connections tab. This is where your problem will be handled; make sure the Inbound & Outbound radio button is active under “Transfer Mode”; under “Accept Connections” check weather you are using “From any host (secure or unsecure)” or “Only from host using…”. If you are using Authentication or Encryption, then you will have more to setup. Both of the above (Inbound & Outbound transfer mode and “From any host…” connection) are defaults, if this is the case with your site then you must specify and configure your setup under the “Message Delivery” section. If you can get your hands on a very good book (Managing Microsoft Exchange Server by Paul Robichaux, published by O’Reilly) on pages 274-276 outlines everything you need to know about making connections between Exchange and other email hosts. Good Luck.

Check for a DNS issue. Make sure there is an MX record for the I-Mail server on the DNS server that the Exchange server uses for lookups. If the I-mail server is in test mode, this could have been overlooked.

Thanks for the help. It was a resolution problem but since we do not have internal DNS on our network I was able to put the info into the host file and it is working beautifully.

Have you configured the Internet Mail Service on your Exchange Server? Unless the Internet Mail Connector is in place and properly configured, I don’t believe that Exchange will not communicate with an SMTP server.

      regards!
