Exchange slow e-mail

By longennamer ·
Our oubound mail on our Exchange 2003 server is extremely slow. It can be 20 minutes to 12 hours before the e-mail is delivered to an internet e-mail address. Internal address are less than a minute. and incoming mail from external address is received in about a minute. What can I check to track down the slow outgoing external e-mails?

The first thing you wnat to do is check the outbound queues in the System Manager. If you see queues building there, check their status. If they are active, then force a connection. If this does not change anything, then it could be an smtp issue. If they are in retry, then turning Diagnostic loggin on that server for the the transport class will help. For help on this see;en-us;821**0

However, I have seen something similar. Follow the instructions of this article. I suspect this is the problem.;en-us;822939.

Let me know. Thanks,

Hi Eric.

I would say first check if your machine is being used as a spam relay as I have seen this sort of behaviour several times, and generally it is due to the amount of mail being relayed through the server. This type of mail may also not show up in the Exchange mail outbound queue.

Also some ISP's can detect that you are acting as a spam relay and will limit the number of SMTP threads they allow from you to their mail servers. Check with your ISP about this.

There are several sites on the Internet that can do relay testing for you, or check your exchange settings;en-us;823019&Product=exch2003

Good luck and let me know how it goes.
