Executing an EXE file in a HTML page

By chinmoy_b ·
How can I execute an EXE file from a HTML page? The link '<a href="file.exe">' starts downloading the EXE file rather than execute. Any programming is acceptable for this (specially JavaScript).

You can't do this directly, because of security considerations.
Ways to do this is thru ActiveX object on page, or Java Applet.

If your situation is similar to ours, you only want to do this on an "Intranet", not on the "Internet". Of course this would be the case because you wouldn't want people to think you were running an exe that could damage thier machine.

Our solution was simple. Create a dll called HTMLrunEXE.dll and pass it one parameter which is the path and name of the executable to run. Using SMS or similar tool, send that dll out to your "Intranet" community. Then from any HTML page you can call that dll and voila, your exe runs.

Good luck.

If the client OS is Win95,98,ME or Win2000 and the browser is IE4 or above and Windows Scripting Host (WSH) is active you can use a WSH shell to open applications or files through the run command.

Try the following:
<html>
<body>
<script Language="VBScript">
Set objWSH = CreateObject("WScript.Shell")
objWSH.run("wordpad")
</script>
</body>
</html>
