Is there any way to enable external people to send to an Exchange distribution list? I would like that kind of listserv functionality in Exchange. In other words, I'd like user@overthere.com to be able to send to list@mydomain.com. It works fine theother way: I include external users on my distribution lists (as Custom Recipients) and they receive all internal mail sent to the List. But they can't initiate mail to the list.

On Exchange 2000 all mail is sent via SMTP. If you have created an internal distribution group that looks like this intgroup@inside.mycompany.com you will need to create an additional SMTP address for that group such as intgroup@mycompany.com. Basically internal distribution groups do not, by default, have external SMTP addresses.
I have found no way to give a distribution list a working smtp address. I've added the list@company.com to the email addresses tab of the list, and I've finally even added the list name to our web pop server as a "new user." No go. External maildoesn't reach the distribution list the way internal mail does.
Check out your default mailbox policies and make sure that each user (custom reciepient and regular) has your smtp suffix enabled. I'm troubleshooting a similar problem. Most people can send to my distro lists, but only one person is having big problems with it.
I'm not sure where the default mailbox policies are. In each user's email preferences, there is a valid smtp address. For custom recipients, it is not our group suffix but the suffix of their provider. Still, from outside the network, I can't send to a distribution list. If you see in this something I'm doing wrong, I'd be most grateful.
If you're asking for technical help, please be sure to include all your system info, including operating system, model number, and any other specifics related to the problem. Also please exercise your best judgment when posting in the forums--revealing personal information such as your e-mail address, telephone number, and address is not recommended.
