extra page in Access report with filter

I have an Access report which gives a second page, blank except for the footing, when I am filtering for one item but only one page per item (even the last one) when the filter is switched off. The page setting is landscape. The report includes 3 subreports, of which one is near the bottom of the page. It does not seem to matter which item I filter for.
