What factors should I consider when choosing a mobile phone based on storage options, such as internal storage capacity, expandable storage (SD card), and cloud storage support, to ensure I meet my needs for performance, apps, media, and future-proofing?

When buying a new one, seen from the point of storage, the storage (internal, SD-card, cloud) should be sufficient and workable for your foreseeable needs for the time you want to use that phone.
The storage in the cloud is infinite, and both Android and iOS support it, so that’s kind of irrelevant when choosing a phone.

Personally, I’m more than happy with 64 GB internal storage, no SD-card, no cloud, but it might be different for you.

Keep in mind that many newer phones no longer support SD cards. I am using a Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra and it doesn’t have an SD slot and uses a free cloud storage application pre-installed on the phone. I have had no issues and even if the storage was not sufficient, I can pay a modest fee for additional storage.

When choosing a phone based on storage, think about how you actually use it. If you download a lot of apps, games, or media, go for at least 128GB of internal storage—it fills up fast.

Expandable storage is great if you take tons of photos or videos, but not all phones have SD card slots anymore, so double-check. Cloud storage is handy for backups and saving space, but you’ll need a good internet connection to use it often.

Future-proofing? Always get more storage than you think you need. Apps and media just keep getting bigger, and running out of space sucks.

Keep in mind that 128 GB seems to be the sweet spot at the higher level for most power users unless you can afford more internal storage. With the downfall of SD slots in most phones, cloud storage is the most common trend and the amount of remote storage can easily be increased for a modest fee. We aren’t at the point where internal storage on a phone/tablet has reached TB (Terrabyte) level.

I think the modern nternal storage trend is going the way of the dinosaur in this age of ever-evolving technology.
