Facts of Life

I have been a senior development manager, but much more enjoy the day to day of the individual contributor. Roles in recent times are along the lines of Senior Consultant, Solutions / Systems / Applications Architect in Professional Services Organizations and with my own business.

I very much enjoy mentoring young talent; but hate the drudgery of a three month budget cycle and other administrivia.

If you find yourself in the same place and have advice for career changes that have worked for you and might for others... please reply to this thread.

double promotion ladder

There are firms, usually fairly big ones, which have two promotion tracks: one for those who wish to administer more and more and one for those who wish to become more and more skilled in some actual activity. Prestige and compensation in the two ladders is about equal: people know that a certain programmer is of the same rank as a VP, for instance. PMSC - now part of CSC - in Columbia SC is one such firm; I have heard of others.
