Failed to install catalog files

By dallen ·
I am running a WIN2K Server. I recieve the above error after trying to install SP2. I have gone on the Msoft sight to find the workaround, which I found and tried but none of their recommendations work. Is there a way any of you know of? This is very inportant as this server is running IIS 5 and without SP2 I cannot install the Code Red patch!

HELP!!

Thanks in advance!

Failed to install catalog files

I know that this is not the answer you are looking for, but if you are concerned about code red and your server is not running index server.

There is a way around the pactch without having to install the patch.

Open up the ISM, rightlick on the server name, properties, Configure mime map/edit.

Remove the .ida and .idq While your at it I would remove the following if you do not need them
.htr, .idc, .stm, shtm, shtml
.printer, .htw

The .printer should also correspond to disablingthe print spooler service. If you don't need to print from that server.

As long as you do not need Index server, Which I always reccomend only installing things that you need on production/web servers, the above will stop code red.

Can you send me the url of the MS site where you found the workaround.

Failed to install catalog files

I know this may sound very stupid. But what is the index server used for? But even if I disable those files it still does not allow me to apply future service packs.

As for where I found the work-around, go to the Msoft Knowledge Base and type in"Failed to install catalog files" Select the exact string option and it will return the article.

Thanks for your quick response.

Failed to install catalog files

Index server is used to "INDEX" web sites, allowing the search function basically.

If it is NOT needed, REMOVE it. Which it sounds like to me that you are not using it.

Like I said before, my answer does not fix the sp2 question, but it solves your code red issue. Which I would follow ASAP.

I looked at the article. It is pretty straight forward.

When you tried option 3, %SYSTEMROOT%\system32\CatRoot\{F750E6C3-38EE-11D1-85E5-00C04FC295EE}\NT5INF.CAT file is corrupt

Did you extract the file from the same cd that you installed it from. If so then I would try getting it from a different CD. If you used a copied cd, get it from the original. If you do not have another original cd to try, I can always send you the file.

If what they are telling you does not work, and you have defineltley tried all 3 issues. I would contact them about this using their phone tech support. You will need a cc# to call them though. It's something that they know about since the posted asolution, but is not working for you.
