I am trying to build our family tree but unfortunately the two programs I know of (Generations Family Tree and Family Tree Maker) do not support the extended (unicode) character sets. Only Latin-1 is supported in both and thus I cannot write it in Vietnamese. Anyone know of one that supports extended codes such as Tahoma? Thank you.

I'm actually using a free Excel template to chart my family tree. It can be downloaded at http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/templates/TC010219671033.aspx The template as it exists on the site is very low-tech (but it is pretty!). The real power comes if you hyperlink a name on your "tree" to more information and/or photographs on another worksheet within the Excel file. I haven't explored it yet, but I wonder if you couldn't also link to or embed audio or video clips pertaining to a person. So the family tree template can serve as a "collapsed view" of your genealogical information, and the "expanded" view for each ancestor comes up by clicking the link. Hope that helps. Personally, I like this Excel approach better than the freeware family tree stuff I've seen. Happy hunting!
Poster rated this answer. Thank you. I have one company that says they are developping one app that recognises unicode but it is not yet finhished. Meanwhile your suggestion helps.
