Faxing with DSL (Enter Phone Number???)

By GGDeal ·
I am connected to the internet, using a Cable modem, however when I try to setup the fax under winXp I get prompted for a phone number, I don't have a modem connected via telephone, rather Cable modem, how do I 'trick' the fax wizard to allow faxes???

I recently installed WinXp Pro, running on a Pentium 366 512mb ram, 20mb hdd. I realize that that will not be the issue, but just added the info 'just-in-case' And that the pentium 366 is the low end allowed on WinXp

There is no trick to it. A DSL modem is not fax compatible. You either need to hook up a regular telephone/fax modem to a phone line or sign up for an internet fax service like efax, zipfax, callwave, faxaway, or jfax. The DSL modem only establishes a connection to the internet, not directly to a fax machine. You can fax through these services where they get the data from you and send it to the fax machine for you.

Faxes require a direct Telephone to Telephone interface.

The internet, and a phone connection are not the same thing.

If you are sending a file to a web address, just send the file, you do not need the fax translation.

There are some faxes that will go through a LAN, but usually hit a Server that translates the info and puts it on a phone line. In Corp. environments a pc can be setup to fax over the network but they usually hit a Fax server or something as well that puts the info on to a phone line. Your home software usually is looking for an actuall telephone line/signal and will not pass through the internet. The obvious options are to use a modem, fax machine, or to use the web services as mentioned ealier. Its likely when you finish the wizard(if you do spoof a Ph#) that it will try to look for a modem and not allow you to dial since one is not installed according to your info.

You will just need a fax modem in your machine, or an external one. Hook up with phone line to your existing jack or telephone. You don't need broadband to send a fax.

If your broadband modem is DSL, us a phone line spitter on the wall side of the modem, and connect to a fax modem. Make sure this connection uses a DSL filter.
