What are the scaleable devices on the fiber optic network available for LAN. What are they along with possible bandwidth?

Fiber optic network

by Ruler In reply to Fiber optic network

I have no practical experience with optical network devices, but I did do a research paper for a Data Communications course I had last term in which I proposed an optical network implementation for a company. Basically, the bandwidth of the fiber is limited by the speed of the electronics; the fiber itself is faster than the solid state electronics that we currently have developed. Terra-bit is attainable according to my research, but at a prohibitive cost. I can e-mail you a copy of my paper if you would like; drop me a line at jswagner@cs.svsu.edu if you would like me to send it to you. (It is out of date, but by less than a year.)

If you're looking to purchase some devices for a network you're building, Cisco and 3Com both have extensive web sites with optical network devices. Also, a resource I got was a "Cisco Business Essentials" CD-ROM, which had a lot of general networking information (not just fiberop) as well as product descriptions on it.

I wouldn't mind a copy of that letter ether, if you don't mind.
