file retrieval

By highlander718 ·
is there a way, to find out what files were deleted by a certain user (that left the company) ? Case is, user deleted some files from the shared folder on the server, that we need, but we do not know the exact location or name, so cannot use the backup. Server is 2000, wkstn. is Xp, files are Excel 2000.
Any ideas how to start on this ? Is there a more detailed history for "Recent documents", like more than the 10 or so files showing up on the Start Menu ?

You can always try to recover them with Undelete:

It should give you a list of files that can be recovered and that should give you a start in the right direction. It comes with a 30 day trial so you have nothing to lose but your time.

Go to the workstation (XP) local folders path:

C:\Documents and Settings\(User_Name)\Recent

start your file/folder recovery software (winternals disk commander is the best one - it's a bootable diskette if you can find it - OK if not use some other boot disk recovery software).
If you know the user name of this person use it instead (User_Name - without ()) if not you'll need to go all the way through the all local users settings. Try to recover the recent documents and then by the shortcut properties you'll be able to see what are recently deleted files on the server.

According to the specific server work you may not be able to restore them (besause they are probably overwritten).
