File will not open

By david.colligan ·
I have been given a floppy disk which has a family tree on it. I have tried to open it with notepad, word etc. I think they have had the tick in the box and saved it as something else by mistake. Is there a way of finding out what it orriginally opened with ???.

File Name

by dklue In reply to File will not open

Can you read the name of the file, does it end with a .ged or .asf, if its .asf its a ancestry system file, their is a free program on that opens these type, if its a .ged
family tree maker or most any program will convert it to open it. Another name for it is
Gedcom file. They are database type files.

Look at the "raw" data in the file

by Jim Phelps In reply to File will not open

You might try one of the "disk editor" programs such as what used to be included with Norton Utilities, which will allow you to look at the "raw" data contained in the file. By looking at the raw data, you might run across the name of the program used to create the file, or at least a clue as to what that program might be.
